Liberal Democrat Councillors in Northampton

The last twenty years has seen a steady growth in the number of Liberal Democrat councillors representing Northampton to a point that the party, in 2003, had the most councillors since the 1930's, and in 2007 has an overall majority for the first time.

Northampton Borough Council

The elections in 1995 saw the Liberal Democrats become the official opposition with 8 councillors.

1999 Borough Council Elections: the Liberal Democrats remained the official opposition with 11 councillors to Labour on the Council with the Conservatives in third place.

2003 Borough Council Elections: the Liberal Democrats are still official opposition with 17 councillors, gaining 6 seats from Labour and holding the 11 already won in 1999. The council has No Overall Control with 20 Conservative, and 9 New Labour councillors. In April 2005 a Liberal Democrat Councillor defected to the Conservatives and a New Labour Councillor resigned from the Labour Party to sit as an Independent. Then in November 2005 the Independent Councillor decided to join the Liberal Democrats, sadly, he was forced to resign on health grounds just before Christmas 2005. Roger Conroy was elected as Liberal Democrat Borough Councillor for Spencer in the subsequent by-election in February 2006.

In the Borough Council Elections held on 3rd May 2007 and the Liberal Democrats took control of the Borough for the first time with a majority of 26 seats, adding the wards of Parklands, Eastfield, St. James, and Thorplands to Liberal Democrat control. The Conservatives were left with 15 seats, New Labour with 5, and one independent Councillor.

Northamptonshire County Council

In the County Council Elections of 1997 the Liberal Democrats won 4 seats all in Northampton. Later that year one Liberal Democrat Councillor defected to Labour giving the party 3 councillors.

The County Council elections in May 2001 saw the party loose all but one of its County Council seats.

This was only be a temporary state of affairs as the election held on the 5th May 2005, saw the return of the Liberal Democrats Group to the County Council with a larger and stronger group of 7 with all the seats being in Northampton.

In January 2006 the County Council Group grew to 8 Councillors when Cllr Mel de Cruz crossed the floor from Labour.
